Against the odds—as Alicia Hartman, O.D., puts it—of a recession and a pandemic, Eye Q Stylist Opticians in Barbados is celebrating 10 years of business this year.
The optometrist, who has worked in optics since she was 13, loves every element of the industry: “from the science to the fashion, dispensing, styling my customers, managing, and promoting the store.” The pandemic, in particular, allowed her to further develop Eye Q’s website and online focus and invest in an in-store lens lab.
Plus, the business is gearing up as it brings its own eyewear brand, Peoples from Barbados, to an even greater international audience.
“The brand is becoming well known—it’s like sharing a piece of our Bajan spirit with communities and cultures around the world. It gives me huge pride!”
Here, Dr. Hartman shares a closer look from Barbados, with love.
Your most distinctive characteristic?
Some people say my smile! And I guess my Bajan soul and love of life!
Most likely to splurge on?
I can’t stop myself when it comes to giving a gift, particularly gifts for the kids. The shared experience of joy and happiness and funny moments comes all at once!
Your eyecare heroes?
Tarrence Lackran, a wonderful promoter of diversity in the industry, who has shown me so much support. Christian Roth and Eric Domege, for their belief in me and their kindness, not to mention their timeless eyewear design savvy. Selima [Salaun] for her flair and sass and awesome energy…and my mentor George Mumford in Bramhall, Manchester, who trained me to be the very best optometrist I can be.
Best activity to find calm?
Long drives with no distractions. My favorite road is to Cherry Tree Hill in Barbados, a winding route of old trees where the road disappears into the incredible blue skies. It’s dreamy and whimsical, a place that offers peace...
Greatest advice to fellow O.D.s right now?
Four P’s: Persistence, passion, perseverance, and patience!
Greatest source of inspiration?
My inspiration is life itself; there is beauty in everything and in everyone around us. We just need to open our minds and our eyes and look to find it! My two boys, Saman and Zai, are also my personal inspiration—two witty and bright stars of the future.
