Dr. Essence Johnson is soaring.
“Amidst the pandemic, I took my career off of autopilot and began passionately pursuing my purpose,” she says.
During this time, she joined Black EyeCare Perspective as the chief visionary officer and co-founded (and co-advises) the first nationally recognized pre-optometry club by the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry, Black EyeCare Perspective Pre-Optometry Club.
“Together, we are redefining the color of the eyecare industry 1% at a time though advocacy, action, and accountability.”
The “HBCU-made” optometrist was last year’s recipient of the National Optometric Association’s Dr. Edwin C. Marshall Emerging Leader Award.
Here, Dr. Johnson talks eyewear, advice, and opportunity.
Your most distinctive characteristic?
I’ve been told that I give the best hugs!
Inspiration to pursuing a career in eye care?
My late paternal grandmother changed my career goals the day she told me I would “go to hell for lying” if I pursued becoming a lawyer. Having a friend in middle school whose father was an optometrist and going to a career day presentation where I met a Black female optometrist and admissions officer put the possibility of optometry as a profession before my eyes.
Most likely to splurge on?
Eyewear! I’ve been on a mission to support Black-owned eyewear brands. This year, I collaborated with Vontélle Eyewear on a limited-edition collection of frames inspired by my sorority, Sigma Gamma Rho, for our centennial celebration.
Best activity to find calm?
I love to escape with a good book or creating graphic designs.
Advice to fellow O.D.s?
What I wish I knew when I was in optometry school is that your first or your first few jobs may not be your last job and that is OK. You should never feel like you cannot move from one opportunity to explore other opportunities especially when your current mode of practice is no longer the best fit personally and/or professionally.
Song playing in the soundtrack to your life?
“It’s Working”—William Murphy
Most memorable experience as an optometrist?
Attending NOA co-founder the late Dr. C. Clayton Powell’s Christmas party when I was completing my residency.
Podcast in your earbuds?
“Grace Over Grind with Dr. Laci C. Robbins.”
Favorite eyewear trend?
My signature frame has a double bridge brow bar. I also rotate between frames that have bright colors, bold prints, or made of unique materials.
