Why Not Both?
With its recently published report, “Double Duty: The Patient & Practice Potential of Dual Contact Lens & Glasses Wear,” the Contact Lens Institute (CLI) is elevating an untapped opportunity into the spotlight.
Just as we choose a heavier coat on an unseasonably cold day, or an athletic tee instead of a blouse for a workout, so too should we have the opportunity to switch between contact lenses and eyewear whenever it suits us.
This is the assertion CLI makes clear through 18 pages of data, beginning with the proof that patients interested in dual wear overwhelmingly exist—and evenly on both sides—with about 1 in 5 glasses-only wearers interested in contact lenses and vice versa. Of the respondents, 8 in 10 agreed that having choice is “a powerful benefit” for reasons including feeling their best in different situations, considering how their eyes feel, or simply wanting to choose their style.
According to CLI, the way to capitalize on the potential of dual wear begins with simply bringing it up during exams. Instead of banking on a one-size-fits-all approach, start by identifying areas in a patient’s lifestyle that can benefit from having the option. Will it be contact lenses or glasses—or both?

Through its survey of more than 2,000 U.S. adults who use prescription vision correction, CLI revealed demographic factors that can assist in identifying dual-wear candidates.
When it comes to comfort, glasses are an easy choice, but CLI’s findings reveal that patients opt for contact lenses when enjoying a night out, working outside the home, and when being active. Data and infographics provided by the Contact Lens Institute.
Talk about it! Perhaps your patient says their vision needs are being met just fine, but they’re likely unaware of how introducing choice can benefit their different lifestyle needs.
According to CLI, suggesting trials has strong potential for success—whether it’s for a first-time wearer or a former wearer who could benefit from experiencing more advanced and innovative contact lens designs.
