Launched amid the Covid-19 pandemic, the Optometric Business Tracker (OBT) is a collaboration between GPN Technologies and Eyecare Business that reveals sales and exams data from more than 2,200 practice locations across the country.

Here, we share August 2023 practice data reported by GPN on Sept. 5. Compared with July 2023, August of this year saw increases of more than 15% each for exams, frames, and patient payments; also, contact lenses were up 12%. Compared with August of last year, the month saw minor increases in specific product categories, but exams were up more than 3% and overall patient payments were up more than 5%.

By analyzing 1.8 million prescription lens transactions during 2022 from a representative sample of 1,000 ECP locations distributed across the U.S. in the GPN dataset, GPN found the share of photochromic lens adoption increases with patient age:
