June 15, 2023 — The Vision Council has published its Focused inSights 2023: Sunglasses Snapshot, revealing insights on adults’ sunglass usages and preferences.
The report comes ahead of National Sunglasses Day, which takes place on June 27 to promote the importance of wearing UV-protective eyewear. A toolkit of downloadable and shareable fact sheets, FAQs, social media graphics, and is available here to help eyecare professionals educate their patients while encouraging them to share their #SolarFlair and #SunglassSelfie posts on #NationalSunglassesDay.
Here are some key takeaways from the report:
- Although sunglasses are often considered an accessory, 72% of respondents reported primarily wearing sunglasses to see better when the sun is too bright, and 62% reported wearing them for UV protection.
- While only 20% report wearing sunglasses while playing sports, 29% say they own sport sunglasses, and they are most likely to wear them while running (45%), fishing (40%), and biking (36%).
- Preferences for shape vary by gender and age, but 51% of respondents prefer sunglasses with a square silhouette and 37% prefer an aviator shape.
- When shopping for new sunglasses, 82% of respondents reported that fit and comfort were most important, followed by durability (74%), performance and functionality (74%), and price (73%).
- Thirteen percent of respondents reported never wearing sunglasses, potentially reflecting a continuing need for consumer awareness and education about UV safety and eye health.
