Eschenbach Optik of America Inc. introduces the Optaro XL iPad Video Magnifier, a device designed to convert an iPad into a video magnifier and mobile screen reader for individuals who have vision impairment. The system is intended for use in home, educational, and workplace settings and combines a stand, integrated camera, and proprietary app that work together with a user’s iPad.
The Optaro XL projects magnified images onto the iPad screen using an integrated HD camera, and the stand offers 2 height positions to support ergonomic use, Eschenbach shares. Through the accompanying app, users can adjust magnification levels from 2.5x to 22x, modify illumination, select from 14 color contrast modes, and use features such as underline and blinds, according to the company. The app also includes optical character recognition (OCR) functionality with 3 customizable text-to-speech processing options.
For portability, the device folds flat to approximately 2 inches in height and weighs about 3 pounds. It can be stored or transported in a protective carrying case and offers an estimated battery life of up to 6.5 hours.
