Score for Style: Silmo Trends
By Amy Spiezio
Transit strikes and the Rugby World Cup crowds may have created a little competition for getting around Paris, but Silmo was a still a winning effort. The 42,669 visitors present represented a drop of 8.5 percent compared with 2006, noted Silmo officials. The transport difficulties and space competition particularly impacted the foreign professional representation, which dipped 6 percent to 22,315.
On the positive side, the Silmo show celebrated its 40th anniversary with 15 percent extra exhibition space and a gala "Odyssey" event to celebrate the milestone. The event also hosted the 14th Silmo d'Or prize-giving ceremony (see winners in sidebar).
Another highlight was the sheer mix of style trends presented. Options is the key concept for the year, with colors, materials, and inspirations drawn from a wide range to provide something for every consumer. The main trends in frame fashion included:
- Retro. Everything old is new again. Many companies are looking to styles from days gone by for new inspiration, and old favorites are being revamped for a fresh look.
- Round. After years of rectangular shapes, round frames are opening the face and creating a softer look.
- Crystal. Updated with metal accents or color tints, clear plastic are turning up as a frequent frame favorite.
- Organic. Natural choices are continuing to hold their place in the spotlight. Wood, horn, and other organic materials, as well as Mother Nature's color palette are flourishing.
-Elegance. It's down to ladies and gentlemen these days as chic, subtle style are exhibiting toned-down bling.
Next year's fair will run Oct. 28 to Nov. 2. For more information, visit www.silmo.fr. EB
