PEOPLE Michael Daley was named president of the Healthy Eyes for Life Foundation. In this role, he will work with the foundation's marketing and funding committees and assist the foundation's officers and directors in board and leadership development, developing, and supervising staff, and serving as the Healthy Eyes for Life spokesman. Daley has been in the optical industry for over 40 years and currently serves on numerous boards and councils. Giuseppe La Boria is Allison's new senior vice president for worldwide sales. An optical industry veteran, La Boria was previously sales manager for Safilo in Italy, where he implemented the worldwide launch of Diesel Eyewear. Most recently, he oversaw sales for Luxottica's wholesale division. Eye Care Associates, a multi-site practice in North Carolina, has added April Kwong, OD, to its team. Ogi Eyewear has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities in Minnesota to provide children with eyecare necessary for success in school and daily life. QSpex Technologies, Inc., obtained an investment from Essex Woodlands Health Ventures to help expand the company's product development and prepare to make its market introduction in Q4 of 2010. QSpex Technologies is developing spectacle lenses with the capability of delivery to a patient in a single visit.
AWARDS
Lighthouse International presented Robert W. Massof with the 2009 Pisart Vision Award. The award is given by Lighthouse International to an outstanding leader who has made an extraordinary contribution to the prevention, cure, and treatment of severe vision impairment or blindness.
The Essilor Vision Foundation was recognized with the Excellence in Mission Achievement Award for organizations with operating budgets under $1 million by the Center for Nonprofit Management in Dallas.
Transitions Optical has announced the grand-prize winners and finalists of the “Live Your Vision” photo contest. Leonard Bertoli, OD, of Melrose, Mass., is the grand-prize winner in the eye-care professional category. Other finalists in the eyecare professional category were: Beverly Smith-Jue, Danville, Calif.; Tina Mazza, Tinton Falls, N.J.; and Jennifer Braun, Manorville, N.Y. CORRECTIONS
In the October 2009 issue article, “As the Frame Turns,” the Hellertown, Pa.-based optical shop Advanced Optics was incorrectly listed as Advanced Eyecare.
In the December 2009 issue, the Aspex frame featured in Frame Introductions was misidentified. The new release is model S3203 from the Manhattan Design Studio collection.
