Davinder Sidhu, O.D., is a multihyphenate entrepreneur.
He’s a practice owner, contractor, digital creator, winery co-owner and consultant, and president of an online eyecare store—to name a few.
But, at his core, Instagram’s @TheGenuwineOD is an advocate for eyecare education, and his page proves that. With posts like “7 Signs That Your Eyes Are Dry” and “10 Signs That You May Need Glasses,” Dr. Sidhu aims to educate the public about the importance of routine eye exams.
Here, he dishes on Kobe Bryant, sneakers, and scrubs. —Kerri Ann Raimo
Your most distinctive characteristic?
I think my ability to build rapport. I believe this has helped me build great doctor-patient relationships but also business relationships as well.
Most likely to splurge on:
Golf—that’s a no-brainer for me!
Greatest advice to fellow O.D.s right now?
Diversify your income streams from optometry alone. Build toward having multiple income streams from different sources. I think the pandemic was an eye-opener for many eye doctors who were relying solely on their optometry salaries.
Most rewarding professional accomplishment?
I spent a few years as a travel doctor to remote communities in northern British Columbia that did not have access to eye care or even adequate levels of normal health care. It was challenging but it also helped me become a better doctor and person.
Greatest source of inspiration?
Kobe Bryant. I think his mentality applies to any aspect of life. Learning to embrace everything that comes at us ultimately helps you control our life.
Song playing in the soundtrack to your life?
With how busy my days are, I would say… “Hustlin’” by Rick Ross.
Podcast in your earbuds?
I’m a big sports fan, so I listen to a few different sports podcasts when I’m stuck in traffic: “32 Thoughts,” “The Old Man and the Three,” and “All the Smoke.”
Favorite eyewear or fashion trend right now?
I have two words for you: sneakers and scrubs. I’m loving all the new fitted scrub brands that let us show off our sneaker collections at the office. Scrubs now look fashionable, which wasn’t the case even two to three years ago!
