Dec. 28, 2021 – Assistive technology changes lives. Now, thanks to a two-year partnership between eSight and the non-profit Sight Savers America, five visually impaired students in Texas will return to school with eSight 4 vision enhancement devices.
Based in Alabama and founded in 1997, Sight Savers America (SSA) identifies needs and then works to secure treatment for severely visually impaired students aged 13-18 in 16 states. In this instance, the organization donated monetarily and also raised funds through eSight’s eMPOWER program. The result? Each student has been gifted eSight 4, a head-mounted device that uses a combination of hardware and software to correct visual acuity up to 20/20 for 20 different eye conditions.
The device will improve both vision and mobility for these students, as it can be worn indoors and outside...a first for these young people. Its bioptic tilt technology allows eSight 4 wearers to use their peripheral vision wherever they are. And, because the device’s software is cloud-based, it stays updated.
For its part, SSA provides follow-up vision care, screenings, and, as needed, low vision services to approximately 100,000 children each year. It also provides high-tech vision aids at no cost to qualifying families.
Talking about the process of coming together with eSight, SSA president, founder, and CEO Jeff Haddox says, “As fundraising challenges emerged over the last two years, we never gave up on getting these students the assistive technology that can transform their lives. Our partnership with eSight allows these students to experience the world in a new way. For those who love art, a trip to the museum will be extra special. For a soon-to-be high school graduate, this means more possibilities in life.”
Addressing the partnership from eSight’s perspective, the company’s president and CEO Robert Vaters explains, “Sight Savers America recognizes the critical role that advanced assistive technology can play in improving quality of life and opening up a world of possibility...Children who have received eSight are able to create beautiful art, play light sports, and go to school without eyestrain and pain. We can’t wait to see what these students do next.”
