Sept. 25, 2023 — Ahead of the annular solar eclipse taking place Oct. 14, the American Optometric Association (AOA) is sharing eye safety information to educate the public in addition to materials for member doctors to further amplify the message.
Traveling from the coast of Oregon to the Texas Gulf Coast, the eclipse will be visible in Oregon, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, and Texas. Because the sun is never fully blocked by the moon during an annular solar eclipse, retinal burns can occur when the eyes are exposed to the sun. Also known as solar retinopathy, these retinal burns can be temporary or permanent with no associated pain.
