April 20, 2023 — After surveying more than 450 eyecare professionals, ClearVision Optical has published a report intended to help the industry better understand male patients by identifying essential factors men consider when purchasing eyewear.
"The stereotype is that men don't care about shopping or fashion," says Cathy Kaye, head of product design and development at ClearVision. "However, this stereotype does not help ECPs meet the needs of their patients. "
Here are some key takeaways from the report titled, “The Hidden Factors Driving Male Eyewear Purchases”:
- While comfort means different things to different people, 75% of respondents chose comfort as the top factor influencing their decision, followed by fit (55%).
- The survey highlighted a potential gap in the market, as 49% of ECPs selected larger size options as the biggest need in men’s eyewear, followed by frames made with lighter materials (36%).
- At 39%, the third most-selected consideration when purchasing eyewear is opinions from significant others, followed closely by the price point at 35%.
- The remaining most popular considerations are brand name (18%), dispenser’s opinion (17%), and technical features (12%).
