Oct. 18, 2023 — The Vision Council (TVC) has announced the completion and approval of the Lens Product Description Standard (LPDS) Version 1.00, an eventual replacement for the Lens Description Standard v2.2 (LDS v2.2).
To reflect innovations in lens design, TVC established the lens product description standard committee comprising TVC members and volunteer industry experts who agree LDS v2.2 is no longer sufficient. Based on the foundations of LDS v2.2, LPDS offers an extensible format that enables “flexibility to define digital designs independent of lens blanks, the ability to describe unique processing parameters, and the structure to deliver base curve charts for lens selection,” TVC shares.
TVC names developing industry standards for lenses as a key component to its technical initiatives. Therefore, the newly established committee will work alongside its other groups—the lens technical committee and the data communication standard committee—to produce or collaborate on other various standards and communications.
The lens product description standard committee met at Vision Expo West 2023 to vote on the final approval of Version 1.00.
“LPDS is a much-needed enhancement to our industry’s current lens description standard and better complements evolving technology and digital lens features,” says Michael Vitale, TVC vice president of membership, government relations, and technical affairs.
