March 21, 2024 — The American Optometric Association (AOA) has introduced the first edition of its evidence-based clinical practice guideline, “Care of the Patient with Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma,” available online for a 30-day review period.
“AOA’s clinical practice guidelines are designed to elevate health care quality by providing doctors of optometry a platform to build quality clinical care to ensure patients are diagnosed and treated based on the best available scientific research,” says AOA president Ronald L. Benner, O.D. “Public review helps broaden the perspective of input, so this guideline can exist at its best and most useful form.”
The AOA first published its consensus-based clinical practice guideline in 1995 followed by a revision in 2010. According to the AOA, the new guideline presents the highest quality, most current scientific evidence, research, and analysis, in addition to recommendations for appropriate steps in the diagnosis, management, and treatment of adults with primary open-angle glaucoma.
Now through Wednesday, April 24, the AOA is accepting external review from relevant stakeholders, such as doctors, agencies, industry professionals, and the public. To participate, click here.
