Sept. 5, 2024 — The American Optometric Association (AOA) is recognizing Paraoptometric Appreciation Month this September, a time dedicated to acknowledging the contributions of practice staff who play a critical role in optometric patient care. With a growing demand for eye health services, the AOA is focused on supporting paraoptometric professionals by providing education and resources that enhance their skills and support the needs of practices.
To support paraoptometric staff, the AOA recommends several initiatives:
- Enroll staff as AOA associate members: Optometric practice staff can be enrolled as associate members of the AOA, granting them access to continuing education resources, professional development materials, and discounted event registration fees. Membership also includes access to publications, networking opportunities, and training programs.
- Encourage paraoptometric certification: With increased demands on doctors of optometry, the AOA emphasizes the importance of certified paraoptometric staff. Certification ensures that staff are equipped with the latest skills and knowledge. The CPC Paraoptometric Examination is available for those seeking certification, with study materials and a handbook available to help candidates prepare.
- Utilize the EyeLearn professional development hub: EyeLearn, the AOA’s centralized education platform, offers CE courses, webinars, and professional development resources aimed at improving clinical and practice management skills. The platform also hosts the Para Speaker Series and courses on surgical assisting.
The AOA also encourages members to recognize the contributions of paraoptometric staff on social media using #AOAParaMonth2024. For more information, contact the AOA Education Center at educationcenter@aoa.org.
