Oct. 17, 2024 — The American Optometric Association (AOA) Foundation, in partnership with PERC Alliance, has announced the opening of applications for the second annual Golden Opportunity Award, which honors the legacy of David Golden, O.D. Now through Jan. 15, 2025, optometrists can apply for the award, which provides $50,000 to up to three recipients to help establish their first independent practice.
The Golden Opportunity Award was introduced last year to recognize and support optometrists committed to improving eye care in underserved communities. The inaugural recipients (Rebecca Chown, O.D., FAAO; Melissa Macco, O.D.; and Alyssa Putman, O.D.) each used their awards to make significant contributions to their communities, the AOA shares. Dr. Putman integrated new technologies into her practice and offered free clinics, Dr. Macco expanded care access for the Latino community, and Dr. Chown developed a mobile vision clinic to serve rural and Native American populations. These efforts highlight the impact of the award on both recipients and the communities they serve.
The award honors Dr. David Golden, a respected figure in the field of optometry known for his dedication to fostering future leaders in the profession. The Golden Opportunity Award continues his legacy by supporting optometrists from underrepresented groups or those committed to establishing practices in underserved areas, promoting a more diverse and equitable landscape in optometry.
“We are proud to continue the Golden Opportunity Award in partnership with the American Optometric Association, the AOA Foundation, and the Golden Family,” says Jason Lake, O.D., general manager of PERC Alliance. “This award not only honors Dr. Golden’s legacy but also provides crucial support for optometrists aspiring to own independent practices, a goal he held dear.”
