Nov. 14, 2024 — EssilorLuxottica has announced a $300,000 contribution to the American Academy of Optometry Foundation (AAOF) to support optometrists pursuing their Ph.D. in vision science fields. The funding, revealed during the AAOF’s Celebration Luncheon on Nov. 9, will aid optometrists who seek advanced education in areas such as physiological optics, biomedical sciences, public health, and neuroscience.
The AAOF’s O.D./Ph.D. Program addresses the shortage of Ph.D.-level faculty in optometry by encouraging optometrists to pursue doctoral studies, aiming to equip future professionals and researchers with expertise to advance eye care and academic standards.
“To ensure the future of optometry, it’s important that we make critical investments in education. We’re proud to support the AAO Foundation in their efforts to ensure the next generation of O.D.s has the most expansive, richest education surrounding vision care,” says Fabrizio Uguzzoni, president of professional solutions, EssilorLuxottica Americas.
“The fellowships are designed to support the next generation of leaders in optometry and vision science, and to provide them with the resources, mentorship, and opportunities to drive impactful change in their fields,” says AAOF president, Rachel A. Coulter, O.D., M.S., FAAO. “This investment is essential to support a vibrant future for optometric practice and for our communities and organizations.”
