Sept. 26, 2024 — Prevent Blindness has announced October as Contact Lens Safety Month to raise awareness about the proper use of both prescription and cosmetic contact lenses. To support this, the nonprofit provides fact sheets, shareable social media content, and dedicated webpages to educate the public.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, approximately 45 million Americans wear contact lenses. While contact lenses can offer safe and effective vision correction, many people are unaware that they are classified as prescription medical devices. Selling contact lenses without a prescription, including decorative or cosmetic lenses, is illegal and violates Federal Trade Commission regulations. This is particularly relevant during Halloween when demand for decorative lenses rises.
An episode of Prevent Blindness’ Focus on Eye Health Expert Series, "Contact Lens Safety," features a discussion between Prevent Blindness president and CEO Jeff Todd and Thomas L. Steinemann, M.D., a professor of ophthalmology at Case Western Reserve University, regarding patient advocacy and the risks of improper contact lens use.
“For many people, contact lenses can be a great alternative for eyeglasses,” says Todd. “By diligently following the guidance of an eyecare professional, contact lens users can maintain healthy eyes and clear vision today and for years to come.”
