The Vision Council (TVC) Foundation, in partnership with EyeMed Vision Care, has released a new webinar focused on the future of the eyecare workforce, “Fueling the Future: The Next Generation of Eyecare Professionals.” The free on-demand webinar examines career pathways, workforce shortages, and strategies to support emerging talent across the profession.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of optometrists is projected to grow 9% between 2023 and 2033, faster than the average for all occupations. Despite this expected growth, 20% of eyecare providers report severe or extreme shortages of optometrists. Many in the industry cite expanded training and education opportunities as critical to addressing the gap, TVC shares.
Speakers from across the profession contributed to the discussion, including: Alysse Henkel, TVC’s vice president of research & insights; Pete Kehoe, OD, EyeMed Vision Care’s vice president of provider relations; Mick Kling, OD, senior director of professional development at Vision Source; and Howard Purcell, OD, FAAO, president of the New England College of Optometry.
The conversation explores current workforce trends, growing interest in optical careers, and the importance of early education and student engagement in strengthening the pipeline of future providers.
In addition to the webinar, EyeMed and TVC Foundation have introduced a grade school curriculum kit, “Eye Exams and Your Eye Doctor,” designed to help children learn about the eye exam process through activities, games, and practical eye health tips.
